WHAT IS A CO-OP? Housing
co-ops are different from commercial landlords: residents are members, not
tenants, and the property is collectively owned and operated by the co-op’s members,
not a landlord. Co-ops are also different from condominiums: member
households do not individually purchase, own or sell co-op shares or property
when they join or leave. The Residential
Tenancies Act has no authority over co-ops and their members because co-ops fall
under the legal jurisdiction of the Co-operative Corporations Act.
Designed to offer people control over
their homes, a co-op is owned and managed on a non-profit basis by people who
live there. It works democratically with members voting on all
important decisions. A co-op is home to people from a wide variety of
backgrounds and cultures - its doors are open to everyone.
Open to folks like
- YOU!
WHO WE ARE WOBURN VILLAGE was originally built in the mid 1960's.
In 1991, Tenants Non-Profit Re-Development Co-operative negotiated on behalf
of the tenants, with the landlord, to purchase the property. In 1992
the tenants voted in favour of the conversion and intensification of the
complex and on May 1, 1992, officially became Woburn Village Co-Operative,
under the Province of Ontario P-10,000 programme.
In 1992 and 1993 the original 145
units underwent renovations and construction of 40 new units consisting of 20
two bedrooms and 20 one bedrooms plus a co-op centre began in late 1993.
Woburn has been used as a model for
rehab co-ops within Metro Toronto and as far away as South Africa.
